What Is a Composition Roof?

A composition roof is an asphalt-shingle roof. The “composition” is a fiberglass or organic mat, soaked in asphalt, then coated with ceramic granules. On an Omaha driveway that is the roof you already know — not slate, not standing-seam metal, not a rubber membrane.

People also write “comp roof” or “composite shingles.” In the trade, composition almost always means asphalt. It does not mean the plastic or rubber “composite shake” products sold as a slate look-alike. If a bid says composition, ask which bag: three-tab or architectural.

What a composition roof is made of

• Mat — fiberglass on almost every new bundle. Older organic-felt shingles still show up on 1980s ranches.
• Asphalt — the waterproofing. South-slope Nebraska heat cooks it. That is why a 22-year roof can look 30 on the sunny face and 15 on the north.
• Granules — the ceramic chips that take UV and hail. Piles in a downspout after a storm are a clue, not a diagnosis by themselves.
• The system under it — ice-and-water at the eaves and valleys, underlayment, drip edge, boots, and ridge. A pretty field on lazy flashing is still a leak.

Three-tab versus architectural

Three-tab is a single layer with the cutouts you can see from the street. Architectural — also called laminated — has a second layer glued on. It looks thicker, handles plains wind better, and is what we install on most Omaha replacements. Three-tab still covers older Millard and Ralston ranches. We do not put it back on unless the owner asks and understands it is the thinner product.

Class 4 impact-resistant shingles are still composition. They are just a tougher asphalt mix. That is a different conversation — see Class 4.

How long a composition roof lasts in Nebraska

The bag’s “30-year” line is a warranty class, not a calendar. Hail, south-slope heat, and a second layer decide more than the marketing year. A sheltered north face in Stromsburg can look serviceable at 20. A West Omaha two-story that took a 2024 cell can be done at 12. We write that after we are on the roof.

Is composition the right roof here?

For most steep-slope houses in Omaha and central Nebraska, yes. It is what the housing stock is built for, what most insurers and appraisers expect, and what a crew can repair without a specialty shop.
