What Is Lap Siding?

Overlapping lap siding courses on a residential wall in Omaha, Nebraska

Lap siding is any wall covering hung in courses that overlap — the bottom of the upper board covers the top of the one below, so water sheds. People also say clapboard, bevel siding, or “lap.” It is a method, not a brand. Vinyl Dutch lap, painted fiber cement, and old pine clapboard are all lap siding.

What you are looking at on the street

  • Wood clapboard — solid boards, usually cedar or pine, face-nailed. Common on older Lincoln bungalows and farmhouses. Needs paint. Splits at the butt if the end was never primed.
  • Vinyl lap — a plastic panel formed to look like one or two boards. Locks instead of nails through the face. Most Omaha ranches from the 80s and 90s.
  • Fiber cement lap — a rigid board with a wood grain or smooth face. Hung like clapboard. Heavier. Painted. What fiber cement is.
  • Engineered wood lap — a treated wood-strand board. Lighter than cement. Still a paint product. Check the warranty on ground clearance; Nebraska splash will void a low starter.

Why the overlap matters

The reveal — the height you see on each course — has to stay even or the wall looks drunk from the driveway. Vinyl locks set the reveal. Wood and cement let you cheat a course to hide a window head, and that is how a DIY wall goes crooked by the third floor.

Lap is not the only siding. Board-and-batten, vertical panels, and steel are different systems. If a bid says “lap” without the material, ask. A vinyl lap price and a Hardie lap price are not the same job.

What we hang

On most hail elevations we re-hang vinyl lap because that is what the house already has and what the claim will pay. Fiber cement lap goes on when the house already wears it or the owner is buying the paint look. We do not sell “the best siding.” We sell the wall that matches the house and the weather barrier behind it — see how to put siding up.

Quick answers

Is lap siding the same as clapboard?

Clapboard is wood lap. Lap siding is the overlapping method — wood, vinyl, or fiber cement. Ask which material is on the bid.

Does lap siding work in Nebraska weather?

Yes. Most houses here already wear it. Hail and sun decide the life more than the profile. The wrap and flashing under it decide whether the wall stays dry.

Can you mix vinyl lap with fiber cement lap?

Not on the same elevation if you care how it looks. Different thickness, different corners, different paint. We keep one system per wall.
